This mediumweight white organic cotton fabric has a matte textured surface due to the basket weave. Basket weaves tend to have more of a texture than plain weaves, due to the doubling of yarns woven in the weft, however is still smooth-feeling on the skin. With a dense weave, it has got a bit of structure to it, so it is less fluid than a sateen while also being more substantial in hand-feel than a poplin.
This is a really versatile fabric, being great as a natural dyeing and printing base, embroidery or painting. In terms of clothing, it is opaque so is wonderful for summer tops and tunics, dresses, easy trousers and skirts, lined jackets or as a lining itself. It is also lovely for interiors; homewares, cushions, blinds and curtains, pillowcases and for quilting.
The spinning of the organic cotton into yarn, the weaving of the fabric on power looms and bleaching of the finished fabric is all done in a female-led co-operative in rural India, certified Fair Trade by the WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation). Organic cotton itself if cotton grown without pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers, and is picked by hand to retain the integrity of the cellulosic fibre. Non-GMO seeds are used in organic cotton cultivation, ensuring that the farmers are not caught in a web of debt with large companies. This organic cotton is non-certified, being more of a transitional crop to help support farmers and small communities who cannot afford the certification.
All cotton production uses a lot of water and chemicals in its production, however, this fabric is created using rain-fed organically-cultivated cotton, spun and woven with little electricity, and without dyeing (just eco bleaching). The fabric itself is biodegradable under the right conditions.
Please note, as this is a handwoven and hand-dyed fabric, woven using organic cotton fibre that is hand-picked and processed, there is likely to be small irregularities in the weave, primarily as a slight slub or dark thread that has been pulled through the weft. We hope that you can take this as part of the charm. If you see the last photo, you'll see what we're referring to.
To care for your product:
Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer. Iron med-hot temperature.
Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year.
We also recommend line drying as this reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher or even just steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.
Note, it will also shrink around 3-5% due to its unwashed and handwoven state.
