A lightweight, floaty, black and off-white striped fabric for dressmaking, fashion and interiors.

Fabric Description

This beautiful yarn-dyed fabric has irregular horizontal lines and a matte, breathable, airy feel. It drapes and flows very well. The stripes run across the fabric width in a dyeing technique known as a "melange". This is when a multicoloured yarn is woven together, creating an irregular striped pattern (similar to ikat).

Ethical & Sustainability Considerations

All cotton production uses a lot of water and chemicals in its production. However, this fabric is created using rain-fed organically-cultivated cotton, spun and woven with little electricity, and with low-impact natural dyes.

Organic cotton is grown without pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers and is picked by hand to retain the integrity of the cellulosic fibre. Non-GMO seeds are used in organic cotton cultivation, ensuring that the farmers are not caught in a web of debt with large companies. This organic cotton is non-certified and known as a "transitional" crop in the industry. This means that while organic practices are implemented, they are not accredited. We are proud to support these farmers and small communities who cannot afford the certification at this time.

The spinning of the organic cotton into yarn, the weaving of the fabric on power looms, and the bleaching of the finished material is all done in a female-led co-operative in rural India, certified Fair Trade by the WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation).

The fabric is biodegradable under the right conditions.

Care

Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer. Iron med-hot temperature.

Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 annually.

We also recommend line drying, which reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher, or steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.

Natural handwoven fabrics tend to shrink 3-5%, so please wash this textile before you create any products that will require washing at a later date.

Handwoven Black & Ecru Stripe Shirting

Lovely fabric. Would need lining for some projects as it is see through but I see that as a challenge rather than a negative.
