Organic White Mediumweight Basket Weave Cotton

250-T20-WHTMBasket-OTR

Regular price £20.45

Mediumweight white organic cotton fabric with a matte, textured basket weave.

Price per metre. Multiple quantities will be cut as a continuous length.

Description

Basket weaves have more of a texture than plain weaves due to the doubling of yarns woven in the weft. This is smooth on the skin with a dense weave and a bit of structure. It is less fluid than a sateen while also being more substantial in hand-feel than a poplin.

This versatile fabric is great as a natural dyeing and printing base, embroidery or painting. In terms of clothing, it is opaque, so is wonderful for summer tops and tunics, dresses, easy trousers and skirts, lined jackets or as a lining itself. It is also lovely for interiors; homewares, cushions, blinds and curtains, pillowcases, and quilting.

It is also available in a slightly lighter weight or a plain weave muslin. This fabric is the third one down in the group shots, also shown with bleached white denim.

Ethical production:

The spinning of the organic cotton into yarn, the weaving of the fabric on power looms, and the bleaching of the finished fabric is all done in a female-led co-operative in rural India, certified Fair Trade by the WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation). Organic cotton is grown without pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers and is picked by hand to retain the integrity of the cellulosic fibre. Non-GMO seeds are used in organic cotton cultivation, ensuring that the farmers are not caught in a web of debt with large companies. This organic cotton is non-certified, being more of a transitional crop to help support farmers and small communities who cannot afford the certification.

Sustainability:

All cotton production uses a lot of water and chemicals in its production. However, this fabric is created using rain-fed organically-cultivated cotton, spun and woven with little electricity, and without dyeing (just eco bleaching). The fabric itself is biodegradable under the right conditions.

Please note, as this is a handwoven and hand-dyed fabric, woven using organic cotton fibre that is hand-picked and processed, there are likely to be small irregularities in the weave, primarily as a slight slub or dark thread that has been pulled through the weft. We hope that you can take this as part of the charm. If you see the last photo, you'll see what we're referring to.

To care for your product:

Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer. Iron med-hot temperature.

Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year.

We also recommend line drying, which reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher, or even steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.

Note that fabrics can shrink around 3-5%, so please prewash all fabrics before sewing.

Ideal For:

Aprons, Bags, Bedding, Belts, Blinds, Curtains & Pelmets, Dyeing, Embroidery, Hand Sewing, Handkerchiefs, Interiors, Scarves & Neckwear, Machine Sewing, Napkins, Printing, Quilts, Shirts & Blouses, Soft Furnishings, Summer Skirts & Dresses, Table Runner, Tops & Tunics, Underwear & Lingerie

Sturdy cotton fabric

This is nice densely woven, sturdy fabric. I think it is more creamy in color than white. I will be using this for needle work/embroidery. There are variations in the weave (imperfections) but that is what makes this so lovely, being hand made!
