This fabric is a unique luxurious blend of pineapple leaf fibres, raw silk, and spun mulberry silk. It's transparent with a beautiful, floaty drape and stunning handle, similar to heavy chiffon.

During the harvest of the pineapple fruit, the pineapple leaves are saved from being discarded; the fibres are manually detached from the leaves, washed at a nearby river and hung to dry. The leaf strands are then knotted and handwoven on hand-powered looms by women in a cooperative on an island in the Southern Philippines. Pineapple fibres can last decades and, once woven into a textile, are considered an heirloom piece; the longer you keep pina textile, it transforms into a vintage beige colour and gets softer with each passing generation.
If that wasn't impressive enough, the Canadian spun mulberry silk comes from the leftovers of the reeling process (this means that no silkworms were killed in the production of this fibre). It is blended with Philippino raw silk, so it cannot claim to be animal-product-free, but this blend ensures a lighter weight textile with a lustre rather than high shine as with conventional silks.

Sewing experience: This fabric is matte, making it easier to handle, but its sheerness may be trickier for the novice sewer.
Being blended with mostly pineapple leaf fibres, please ensure that this fabric does not come in contact with anything acid (this includes orange or lemon), as this breaks down the thread. This fabric can handle high heat and steam, which may cause bubbles but will disappear as the moisture evaporates from the material. Hand-washing in cold water with light pressure is best to remove light stains. Or otherwise, we would recommend simple steaming to release odours.
Stepped pricing is available for 25 metres and over, so please inquire if you are looking for large amounts. We love working with smaller brands: purchase one metre and upwards directly from the website and email us for wholesale quantities for bulk production when you're ready. We welcome large and small orders from brands of all sizes. See our full wholesale guidelines here.
Please note that refunds are not possible once fabrics have been cut, unless in the unfortunate event that your material arrives damaged. Please order a swatch before purchasing your metre lengths. Please see our Refunds and Cancellation Policy page for full details.
Due to the nature of handwoven fabrics, there can be irregularities in the weave and print, along with variations in batch colour (as the colour of the natural fibre may vary). We have quality controlled this fabric. However, there could be minor irregularities that we love and see as normal and charming. If you are unhappy with the material you purchase, please let us know, and we'll do our best to rectify it immediately: email@example.com.
