A magnificently lightweight charmeuse silk with a shiny satin finish on one side, and a matte crepe finish on the other. A very light ivory shade, this silk is beautifully soft, incredibly drapey and feels feathery light in the hand. It has sheerness if you hold it to the light. This lightweight charmeuse silk is perfect for blouses and shirts, lingerie, luxe linings, bridalwear, couture trims, intricate embroidery backing and scarves. It has a weight of 19 mommes (1 momme = 4.340g per sq/m). Will take natural dyes and printing well (check swatches or a sample metre for batch production).
Produced on small family farms, the silk is cultivated using techniques consistent with Organic Cultivation Standards though is what would be classed as "conventional silk" due to the higher volume production. 100% natural, it means that no additives, bleaches or finishes have been used - better for people and planet. For the silkworms, organic standards mean that they are fed mulberry leaves that have been organically cultivated. When it comes to natural reeled silk, the moth has been allowed to complete it's full transformation naturally, emerging from the cocoon alive and able to continue with mating. The cocoons can then be hand reeled of their silk, and even if a moth has emerged pushing the silk filament aside, the hand reeling ensures a longer staple fibre. Along with a degumming process to remove the sericin gum, reeled silk is the only silk thread to give charmeuse satin its glowing lustre.
Silk is biodegradable (in the right anaerobic conditions) so at the end of its life can be composted. Silk is also an incredibly strong fibre that will last for a very long time anyway, so along with non-certified organic cultivation and processing, this fabric is beneficial to the land before and after its production.
To care for your product:
We recommend that you eco dry clean or hand wash this fabric. Use a mild detergent, or even none at all to keep it fresh and light throughout its life. Machine wash on a gentle cycle, with mild soap and warm water. If you're making lingerie, it is often beneficial to wash these items within a drawstring bag to prevent too much agitation and wear on the fabric. Tumble dry on low heat, though we recommend air drying to ensure longer lasting items. You can also iron dry from a barely-damp state, which can also help with creasing though a cloth over the top will keep the satin sheen for longer. Never use bleach. Always test a small swatch or section of the garment before sewing if in doubt or creating for a brand.
