Ethical & Sustainability Considerations

Organically cultivated Ajar and Mulberry trees feed and house the silkworms. Both are protected from predators and harmful pests with a large net wrapped around the tree and an occasional spray with a natural blend of Niger, Neem and Mustard plant extracts, which deters pests, protects against fungus and is entirely harmless to the silkworms and the surrounding ecology.

When the time comes for the silkworms to spin their cocoons, they are housed indoors in the perfect temperature and humidity. After roughly one week, the silkworms emerge from the cocoons as adult moths and the cocoons collected.

The natural lifespan of an adult moth is short but significant - they are essential pollinators. The cultivation of Peace Silk has been shown to aid in biodiversity as the moths help to pollinate and preserve local plant species.

Silk is biodegradable (in the proper anaerobic conditions), so it can be composted at the end of its life. Silk is also an incredibly strong fibre that lasts for a very long time. Along with Organic cultivation and processing, this fabric benefits the land before and after its production.

The spinning and weaving are carried out primarily on manual or solar-powered equipment, allowing these processes to be completed even where access to power is limited and reducing the carbon footprint of production. This also generates employment in rural areas and reverses migration to the big cities.

Waste water is filtered and recycled, minimising water usage, and any solid waste filtered out is used as compost.

Product Care

We recommend that you eco-dry clean or hand wash this fabric. Use a mild detergent, or none at all, to keep it fresh and light throughout its life. Machine wash on a gentle cycle with mild soap and warm water. If you're making lingerie, washing these items within a drawstring bag is often beneficial to prevent too much agitation and wear on the fabric.

Tumble dry on low heat, though we recommend air drying to ensure longer-lasting items. You can also iron dry from a barely damp state on the "wrong" side, which can also help with creasing. Never use bleach. Always test a small swatch or section of the garment before sewing if in doubt or creating for a brand.

Suitable For:

Bath Robes, Bedding and Pillowcases, Blinds, Blouses, Bridalwear, Curtains and Pelmets, Dresses, Gowns, Hand Sewing, Handkerchiefs and Napkins, Lining and Pocketing, Machine Sewing, Printing, Scarves & Shawls, Shirts, Sleepwear, Summer Clothing, Tableware, Tops & Tunics, Underwear & Lingerie

Sewing experience: As a slippery fabric, it's recommended for more experienced sewers.

Wholesale And Restocking

Stepped pricing is available for 25 metres and over, so please inquire if you are looking for large amounts. We love working with smaller brands: purchase one metre and upwards directly from the website and email us for wholesale quantities for bulk production when you're ready. We welcome large and small orders from brands of all sizes. See our full wholesale guidelines here

Please Note

Please note that refunds are not possible once fabrics have been cut, unless in the unfortunate event that your material arrives damaged. Please order a swatch before purchasing your metre lengths. Please see our Refunds and Cancellation Policy page for full details.

Note that there is an estimated 4% shrinkage in the warp and weft, so add to your order accordingly. Due to the nature of handwoven and hand-printed fabrics, there can be irregularities in the weave. We have quality controlled this fabric. However, there could be minor irregularities that we love and see as normal and charming. If you are unhappy with the material you purchase, please let us know, and we'll do our best to rectify it immediately: info@offsetwarehouse.com.
