A hand reeled and hand woven wild silk in a natural light creamy colour (creamier than our photo can show). It has a beautiful, authentic irregularity to the finish due to the nature of the worm cultivation and antique loom weaving. With a crinkly stiff feeling before washing, this textile can be stretched and used as canvas, as a base for embroidery or silk painting, it can be folded into Origami, or it can be sewn into an avant garde sculptural garment. Once washed however, it softens and will continue to soften with wear.
*Note: batches will vary due to the nature of wild silk, explained below. The most recent batch is the sepia colour, while earlier batches are shown by the last two images.
Tussah silk is wild silk that is typically gathered in the jungle from cocoons of wild silk moths. Thus wild silk can be considered "organic", as almost all wild silk is wildcrafted, however only practices consistent with organic farming techniques are used in this raising of Tussah silk anyway. The worms are tended outside on plantings of Oak trees, which is what gives the tussah silk its natural creamy beige colouring. Please note, batches do vary wildly due to the wild nature of this textile and weaving so if making for a brand please order what you need in one go, or send us a swatch for matching.
It has a weight of 20 mommes (1 momme = 4.340g per sq/m). Will take natural dyes and printing well (check swatches or a sample metre for batch production). Note that there is an estimated 1% shrinkage in the weft and 4% shrinkage in the warp so add to your order accordingly.
Produced as part of a local government-sponsored project, benefiting the impoverished hill tribe people of the highlands in Southern India, this wild silk is cultivated using techniques consistent with Organic Cultivation Standards. It has been hand woven on small looms built into the cottages of traditional village weaver families. 100% natural, it means that no additives, bleaches or finishes have been used - better for people and planet. For the silkworms, organic standards mean that they are left to feed on natural oak trees. When it comes to peace silk, the moth has been allowed to complete it's full transformation, emerging from the cocoon alive and able to continue with mating. Wild or "tussah" silk comes from the cocoons of worms that have been naturally collected, and where the wild moths may have emerged pushing the silk aside, the method of "muga" hand reeling allows all of the silk to be carefully harvested.
Silk is biodegradable (in the right anaerobic conditions) so at the end of its life can be composted. Silk is also an incredibly strong fibre that will last for a very long time anyway, so along with non-certified organic cultivation and processing, this fabric is beneficial to the land before and after its production. This particular textile is natural in colour, being undyed and unbleached.
To care for your product
As an exceptionally lightweight textile that is prone to snags, we recommend that you eco dry clean or hand wash this fabric. Use a mild detergent, or even none at all to keep it fresh and light throughout its life. Try not to machine wash, but if you're making lingerie, it is often beneficial to wash these items within a drawstring bag to prevent too much agitation and wear on the fabric.
Tumble dry on low heat, though we recommend air drying to ensure longer lasting items. You can also iron dry from a barely-damp state, which can also help with creasing and return the textile to its smooth flat crisp state. Never use bleach. Always test a small swatch or section of the garment before sewing if in doubt or creating for a brand.
