This is one of our - and your - favourites. A gorgeous chunky, ecru cotton with a fantastic structure and hold. Incredibly soft despite it's bulk, it feels lovely against your skin. It's a 2-ply basket weave, which means that the fabric has two thick threads woven together at the same time, creating an unusual texture in hand feel and appearance.
The strong weave structure means that the cotton is particularly durable for items such as bags and accessories, upholstery and soft homewares, and due to its undyed nature is ideal for naturally dyeing or even embroidering. It is 10.6oz so actually has a great weight for jackets, lined summer coats and minimally-detailed trousers and skirts.
The spinning of the organic cotton into yarn, the weaving of the fabric on power looms and bleaching of the finished fabric is all done in a female-led co-operative in rural India, certified Fair Trade by the WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation). Organic cotton itself if cotton grown without pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers, and is picked by hand to retain the integrity of the cellulosic fibre. Non-GMO seeds are used in organic cotton cultivation, ensuring that the farmers are not caught in a web of debt with large companies. This organic cotton is non-certified, being more of a transitional crop to help support farmers and small communities who cannot afford the certification.
All cotton production uses a lot of water and chemicals in its production, however, this fabric is created using rain-fed organically-cultivated cotton, spun and woven with little electricity, and without dyeing - so is in an undyed state. The fabric itself is biodegradable under the right conditions.
Please note, as this is a handwoven and hand-dyed fabric, woven using organic cotton fibre that is hand-picked and processed, there is likely to be small irregularities in the weave, primarily as a slight slub or dark thread that has been pulled through the weft - it is very rare that this occurs though. We hope that you can take this as part of the charm.
Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer. Iron med temperature, though it's probably not so necessary!
Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year.
We also recommend line drying as this reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher or even just steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower. We suggest drying flat if possible to prevent stretching in the weave.
Note, it will also shrink around 3-5% due to its unwashed and handwoven state.
