Handwoven cotton khadi fabric, woven by a small co-operative cluster in India.
"Khadi" refers to a traditional handwoven cloth.
45"/110cm wide, and approximately 75-87g/sqm means that it is suitable for lightweight projects including blouses, shirts, easy loungewear, linings, curtains and homewares, dresses and accessories. A bit lighter, and definitely softer than a poplin, but with that type of opacity and plain weave structure.
It has a really soft hand feel that is smooth on the skin and a light drape that will mean any project you make will have some movement to it.
The stripes are vertical, and so the "tricolore" effect is created in the warp of the small power loom this fabric is woven on. "Yarn dyed" refers to the fact that the yarns are dyed before they are used for weaving, which is why you're able to get lovely patterns like this. The stripes are approximately 7mm wide, and are 13mm apart.
The fabric has a smooth selvedge so you may not even need to seam some garments if the pattern lay is used wisely.
Please note: this is a limited edition fabric and cannot be produced again. This is why swatches of it are not available.
The fabric is hand woven on small power looms using sustainable cotton in Southern India. Unfortunately as there is little traceability in the bulk fibre purchasing, we cannot know if the fibre is truly organically cultivated. The fibre itself is spun within small artisan clusters, and the fabric itself is woven within a community known as a "khadi cluster" in Bengal.
Fabric that is produced, from raw material to finished fabric, within the same country prevents unnecessary shipping during production. The dyes used for the fabric are azo-free, and totally ironable and colourfast (although we always recommend washing your fabrics before you make). As it is hand woven on small power looms, the process from raw material production to weaving and printing uses little energy and water. This textile also sustains the skilled artisans who produce it.
Please note: due to the nature of hand woven and hand printed fabrics, there can be irregularities in the weave and print, along with variations in batch dye colour. We have quality controlled this fabric, however there could be minor flaws that we see as normal and charming.
Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer, though to protect the textile for longer, we recommend hand washing in cool water. Iron med-hot temperature, but it is suggested to do so when damp, or spray a little water on it first.
Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year.
We also recommend line drying as this reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher or even just steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.
Natural handwoven fabrics have a natural tendency to shrink 3-5%, so do wash this textile first before you create any products that will require washing at a later date.
