A lightweight floaty black and off-white (ecru) striped fabric for dressmaking, fashion and interiors. It is a beautiful yarn-dyed melange - this is when fibres of different colours are spun together creating a yarn with irregular blocks of colour. When these yarns are then woven together, they create a beautiful irregular striped pattern, reminiscent of "ikat". As such, the black and white striped fabric is an incredibly unique fabric, with a beautiful matte, irregular appearance, and a breathable, airy feel. It also drapes and flows very well. The stripes are horizontal across the fabric, with one selvedge being a beautifully unique bright blue selvage line.

Ethical production:

The spinning of the organic cotton into yarn, the weaving of the fabric on power looms and bleaching of the finished fabric is all done in a female-led co-operative in rural India, certified Fair Trade by the WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation). Organic cotton itself if cotton grown without pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers, and is picked by hand to retain the integrity of the cellulosic fibre. Non-GMO seeds are used in organic cotton cultivation, ensuring that the farmers are not caught in a web of debt with large companies. This organic cotton is non-certified, being more of a transitional crop to help support farmers and small communities who cannot afford the certification.

All cotton production uses a lot of water and chemicals in its production, however, this fabric is created using rain-fed organically-cultivated cotton, spun and woven with little electricity, and with low-impact natural dyes. The fabric itself is biodegradable under the right conditions. However, due to the authenticity of the weave and fabric hand feel, you'll want to cherish this fabric.

Please note, as this is a handwoven and hand-dyed fabric, woven using organic cotton fibre that is hand-picked and processed, there is likely to be small irregularities in the weave, though because of the pattern anyway any "flaws" will work wonderfully into the texture. The close up photos should show you how unique this is. Note, it does sometimes come with a blue selvedge as with the last photo. Stripes are also irregular with each batch.

To care for your product:

Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer. Iron med-hot temperature.

Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year.

We also recommend line drying as this reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher or even just steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.

Note, it will also shrink around 3-5% due to its unwashed and handwoven state.

Ideal For:

Aprons, Bags, Bedding, Belts, Blinds, Curtains & Pelmets, Hand Sewing, Handkerchiefs, Scarves & Neckwear, Machine Sewing, Napkins, Quilts, Shirts & Blouses, Soft Furnishings, Summer Skirts & Dresses, Table Runner, Tops & Tunics, Trousers, Underwear & Lingerie

Handwoven Black & Ecru Stripe Shirting

Lovely fabric. Would need lining for some projects as it is see through but I see that as a challenge rather than a negative.
