This mocha-coloured hemp silk charmeuse is a beautiful, luxurious fabric with a silken, grainy, satin sheen on one side and a matte finish on the other. The satin side has a shimmery, soft, buttery and delicately-textured feel. Made with a unique blend of 70% hemp and 30% silk, the mocha hemp silk fabric is truly opulent and exotic. The softer hemp fibres come away from the surface, which softens the sheen.
It feels heavy to the touch and drapes wonderfully with a full body. The hemp content also gives the silk fabric added strength and durability, making it suitable for upholstery as well as dressmaking, and even in millinery, lingerie and accessories.
It comes pre-shrunk and is dye-fast, but we recommend testing samples before use.
Hemp is commonly used as a companion crop bordering family gardens as a deterrent to insects and infestations, so also helps the life of other plants. It therefore assists in the economical stability of co-operatives and smallholder farmers, as they are able to grow hemp alongside other agricultural products.
The spinning and weaving conditions for factory workers adhere to ISO 9001:2000, which includes employee apartments, maternity leave, daycare and schooling, access to a clinic, factory transportation, lunch and importantly fair wages. The factory also has community activities.
The leaf is picked off the stalk by hand (the leaves are left to rot on the bed adding to the soil's fertility while the stalk is kept). The stalk is retted in ponds to remove the bark from the woody core, before the fibre is left to dry in the sun and fibrous skin hand-peeled. No electrical machinery is needed then, however, can be labour intensive if a lot of plants need harvesting. Degumming removes the cellulose and lignin from the bark, and are submerged in large vats of sodium hydroxide and water for cooking, yet effluent waters are purified and kept within a closed loop. Mechnical combing then sorts the long and short fibres. A water soluble cationic softener is used, and fibre reactive low impact dyes.
Sustainable Hemp grows without the need for harmful herbicides and pesticides; hemp is planted in dense crops so sunlight doesn't penetrate, reducing weed growth by 95% and eliminating the need for herbicides. No pesticides are used due to the inherent properties contained in the plant itself. Hemp is an ideal rotation crop due to its long taproot structure that helps retain topsoil, while also replenishing soil quality due to the natural leaf composting that regenerates vital elements in the soil. Hemp does not require irrigation unlike other natural fibres i.e. cotton and so primarily grows from rainwater alone. As a result of all of this, hemp does not require organic growing certification but is organically cultivated.
Silk is a lifelong fibre, that cared for will last for decades. Coupled with hemp, this fabric is durable yet luxurious.
Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer, but we recommend delicate washing and air drying.
Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year. We recommend line drying as this reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher or even just steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower. Delicate hand wash or machine wash is best suited for this fabric. Iron on the reverse with a cool temperature.
