A soft and structured, lightweight woven fabric made from a blend of pineapple fibre, banana tree fibre and raw silk. This is incredibly unique and special; suitable for adding structure in dressmaking, for use in millinery and embroidery, as well as some interiors and tableware. It has a characterful grainy texture that offers depth of colour, yet has a sheer appearance.
Abaca is a fibre that comes from the trunk of a non-fruit bearing banana tree. The trunk of the tree is soaked in nearby rivers for softening, making it more manageable to separate the fibres, then knotted in to yarn. Likewise, during harvest of the pineapple fruit, the pineapple leaves are saved from being discarded; the fibres are manually detached from the leaves, washed at a nearby river and hung to dry. The leaf strands are then knotted to create a yarn. The banana and pineapple is then blended with raw silk, and hand-woven on electric-free looms by women in a cooperative on a Southern Philippines island.
Suitable for washing in your machine on a cold temperature, as well as hand wash. You can also dry clean, though we recommend avoiding this due to the chemicals used. This fabric can handle high steam, which may cause bubbles but will disappear as the steam evaporates from the fabric; you could utilise this characteristic to steam your garment to release odours. Being blended with pineapple leaf fibres, please ensure that this fabric does not come in contact with anything acid (this includes orange or lemon), as this destroys the fabric.
Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash, and use mild detergent. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year.
