A peace silk with a featherweight drape and incredible structure similar to organza. It is woven from 100% natural silk that has been reeled from the cocoon, and when woven has a lustrous satin appearance, along with a stiff handle due to the fact that it is non-gummed (the sericin gums remain on the yarns). The weave becomes a little tighter and crinkly when washed, and there can be slight irregularities in the weave due to its hand woven nature. This is a 100% natural silk, with no additives, adulterants, bleaches or finishes. Traditionally woven and worn for the finest women's dress and soft pants in Central Asia, though has many applications: avant garden fashion, couture trims, embroidery and millinery, bridalwear.
Note that there is generally no shrinkage in the weft, and less than 2% in the warp (length). It is a traditionally narrow hand loom width of 50cm, so order accordingly.
Produced on small family farms, the silk is cultivated using techniques consistent with Organic Cultivation Standards. 100% natural, it means that no additives, bleaches or finishes have been used - better for people and planet. For the silkworms, organic standards mean that they are fed mulberry leaves that have been organically cultivated. When it comes to peace silk, the moth has been allowed to complete it's full transformation, emerging from the cocoon alive and able to continue with mating. Additionally, the eggs are raised every year from one strain, assisting in the conservation of the species. This means that the fibre tends to be of a shorter length and so the woven textile may have some small irregularities where there is slub in the yarn.
Silk is biodegradable (in the right anaerobic conditions) so at the end of its life can be composted. Silk is also an incredibly strong fibre that will last for a very long time anyway, so along with non-certified organic cultivation and processing, this fabric is beneficial to the land before and after its production. This particular textile is natural in colour, being undyed and unbleached.
We recommend that you eco dry clean or hand wash this fabric. Use a mild detergent, or even none at all to keep it fresh and light throughout its life. Machine wash on a gentle cycle, with mild soap and warm water. If you're making lingerie, it is often beneficial to wash these items within a drawstring bag to prevent too much agitation and wear on the fabric. As a very lightweight fabric prone to snagging, we suggest sticking to hand washing.
Tumble dry on low heat, though we recommend air drying to ensure longer lasting items. You can also iron dry from a barely-damp state on the "wrong" side, which can also help with creasing. Never use bleach. Always test a small swatch or section of the garment before sewing if in doubt or creating for a brand.
