A lightweight matte screenprinted silky Modal® fibre fabric with an unusual graphic "spots, checks and stripes" pattern in red and black.
It is immensely pliable and drapey, with a natural bias grain stretch in both directions, but structure in the length and cross grain. When you look up close, the texture is grainy and open, but blowing through it actually gives minimal impact so this will be both warming and airy to wear. It does appear to be a satin weave, as the right side has a lustre while the underside does not, yet is still absolutely minimally shiny.
The print is on one side only, with the underside showing the flatness of the pattern. As it is a hand screen print, there are some wonderful "irregularities" where the block is just off (though we cannot guarantee if you will receive this or not in your purchased amount, and is very minimal for this print - see image 9 and 10). The "bricks" of pattern lie horizontally on the fabric (against the grain).
There is a "barely there" feeling due to the light airyness of it, and so is most suitable for blouses, lingerie, sleepwear, lined dresses and floaty skirts, gowns and eveningwear and also accessories like shawls and scarves. It very much feels like a silk. It will also be super comfortable and cooling on the skin as bedding, or ethereal and curtains and blinds. It can also definitely work as a lining fabric for jackets and coats, dresses, pocketbags and suits.
There is a sheerness when held to the light so the shadow of the body can be seen underneath, more so in the red sections.
Modal is a man-made cellulosic fibre that has softness akin - or some say better than - cotton, has increased softness after washing, and are proven to last a long time - with care and consideration.
This eco Modal® textile is also available in other prints. *Note, the colour was tricky to photograph; the red shade is hot with a pink tone but is not especially vibrant, while the black is a true black.
The spinning and weaving is done by skilled artisans in an Indian weaving community of which there are 600+ members. We source this particular fabric from a business that works directly with various weaving communities.
Tencel™ Modal® - that is, a man-made cellulosic yarn produced using Lenzing's protocols, guidelines and processes - has been verified for ethics and sustainability across the chain. From the managed forests where the beech wood is sourced, to the closed loop production process, Tencel™ yarn provides an alternative to true synthetic materials like polyester, or instead of silk derived from animals.
The Tencel™ Modal® yarn production process verifies its managed raw material source and the closed loop solvent and water process (99.9% of solvents are recovered and re-used with water treatment in place). It reduces chemical inputs and outputs, minimises energy, and conserves water used in the production of synthetic materials, and is a more responsible option than viscose where limited traceability occurs.
Tencel™ Modal® is protected by a global certification system, and environmental processes have been developed by Lenzing that are not commercially licensable to other manufacturers. The protocols include PEFC- or FSC-certified sustainably managed beech tree plantations in Austria and surrounding European countries. This is a certified Modal® yarn fabric.
Tencel™ is said to be biodegradable, but this can only occur in specific conditions. So for future-proofing, label whatever you make with the composition of your garment and your item is more likely to be re-used or recycled in a more optimum setting.
The yarn is machine-spun, which means it has exemplar consistency and quality throughout the weave. The colouration is also smooth and equal due to the fabric dyeing process, and washes very well. The dyes are certified azo-free - azo is an organic compound used in dyes and is a known carcinogen.
Due to the care and consideration of the low impact processes, this fabric is certified under the Global Organic Textile Standard for the spinning, dyeing and weaving.
To care for your product:
Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer. Iron med-hot temperature, preferably with steam as it can crease easily, but on the reverse side to protect the print.
Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year.
We also recommend line drying as this reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher or even just steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.
Note, this textile has been finished and washed, but we recommend to wash the fabric before making any products to avoid disappointment that could occur in shrinkage. Dependent on your machine, detergent and laundering methods, shrinkage can still occur.
