Regular price £16.30

Handprinted batik cotton khadi fabric, woven by a small co-operative cluster in India. "Khadi" refers to a traditional handwoven cloth.

45"/110cm wide, and approximately 105-114g/sqm means that it is suitable for so many projects: quilting, garments, homewares, bedding, linings.

It has a crisp and crunchy hand feel that is substantial, so it won't float away. The weave is basketweave, offering durability and strength, with a consistent texture. The print is what we call "connection" due to the effect of neural pathways or mycelium... all created through the traditional technique of batik.

The pattern is created by dyeing the fabric in its first shade, and covering the fabric completely with wax before allowing it to dry. The dried fabric is scrumpled to allow cracks to form in the wax, and then it is placed in to a vat of its second shade. After the fabric is soaked in a fixative, it is placed in a hot vat of water where the wax melts, thereby leaving the darker erratic lines where the second dye was able to penetrate. As batik patterns are created on the 'right' and 'wrong' sides of textiles, you can used either side of the cloth making for easy pattern lays.

Please note: this is a limited edition fabric and cannot be produced again. This is why swatches of it are not available.

Ethical production:

The fabric is hand woven on small power looms using sustainable cotton in Southern India. Unfortunately as there is little traceability in the bulk fibre purchasing, we cannot know if the fibre is truly organically cultivated. The fibre itself is spun within small artisan clusters, and the fabric itself is woven within a community known as a "khadi cluster" in Bengal.

Sustainability:

Fabric that is produced within the same country prevents unnecessary shipping during production. The dyes used for the fabric are azo-free, and totally ironable and colourfast (although we always recommend washing your fabrics before you make). The wax used for the batik process is recovered and reused. As it is hand woven on small power looms, the process from raw material production to weaving and printing uses little energy and water. This textile also sustains the skilled artisans who produce it.

Please note: due to the nature of hand woven and hand printed fabrics, there can be irregularities in the weave and print, along with variations in batch dye colour. We have quality controlled this fabric, however there could be minor flaws that we see as normal and charming.

To care for your product:

Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer, though to protect the hand print for longer, we recommend hand washing any item you make with this textile in cool water. Iron med-hot temperature, but it is suggested to do so when damp, or spray a little water on it first.

Khadi is a strong fabric and can withstand repeated laundering. However, turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year.

We also recommend line drying as this reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher or even just steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.

It has a natural tendency to shrink 3-5%, so do wash this textile first before you create any products that will require washing at a later date.
