Description

This beautiful fabric is immensely pliable and drapey, with a natural bias grain stretch in both directions and structure in the length and cross grain. It is a twill weave with an ever-so-subtle sheen to it.

There has a light and airy "barely there" feeling, so it is suitable for blouses, lingerie, sleepwear, lined dresses and floaty skirts, gowns and evening wear, and accessories like shawls and scarves. It very much feels like silk. It will also be super comfortable and cooling on the skin as bedding or ethereal as curtains and blinds. It can also definitely work as a lining fabric for jackets and coats, dresses, bags and suits.

There is a sheerness when held to the light so the body's shadow can be seen underneath.

Modal is a man-made cellulosic fibre that has softness akin to - or some say better than - cotton, has increased softness after washing, and is proven to last a long time - with care and consideration.

The spinning and weaving are done by skilled artisans in an Indian weaving community of 600+ members. We source this fabric from a business that works directly with various weaving communities.

Tencel™ Modal® is a man-made cellulosic yarn produced using Lenzing's protocols, guidelines and processes. It has been verified for ethics and sustainability across the chain. From the managed forests where the beech wood is sourced to the closed-loop production process, Tencel™ yarn provides an alternative to true synthetic materials like polyester or instead of silk derived from animals.

The Tencel™ Modal® yarn production process verifies its managed raw material source and the closed loop solvent and water process (99.9% of solvents are recovered and reused with water treatment in place). It reduces chemical inputs and outputs, minimises energy, conserves water used in the production of synthetic materials, and is a more responsible option than viscose, where limited traceability occurs.

A global certification system protects Tencel™ Modal®, and environmental processes have been developed by Lenzing that are not commercially licensable to other manufacturers. The protocols include PEFC- or FSC-certified sustainably managed beech tree plantations in Austria and surrounding European countries. This is a certified Modal® yarn fabric.

Tencel™ is said to be biodegradable, but this can only occur in specific conditions. So for future-proofing, label whatever you make with the composition of your garment, and your item is more likely to be reused or recycled in a more optimum setting.

The yarn is machine-spun, which means it has exemplary consistency and quality throughout the weave. The colour is also smooth and even and washes very well. The dyes are certified azo-free (azo is an organic compound used in some dyes and is a known carcinogen). 

Due to the care and consideration of the low-impact processes, this fabric is certified under the Global Organic Textile Standard for spinning, dyeing and weaving.

To care for your product:

Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer. Iron med-hot temperature. To remove stubborn creases, spritz the fabric with water and iron.

Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 annually.

We also recommend line drying, which reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, or light botanical refresher or simply steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower. 

This textile has been finished and washed, but we recommend washing the fabric before making any products to avoid unexpected additional shrinkage. Dependent on your machine, detergent and laundering methods, shrinkage can still occur.

Due to the nature of handwoven and hand-printed fabrics, there can be irregularities in the weave and print, along with variations in batch dye colour. We have quality controlled this fabric. However, there could be minor irregularities that we love and see as normal and charming.
