It has been woven on modern machine looms using fine two-ply yarns that offer it a light but durable characteristic. It is a naturally crisp white colour, though as Eri silk fabric is created using wild silkworms, the batches can vary (*the current batch is creamy). These wild silkworms create naturally nude fibres as their food source is the castor-bean plant. It is perfect for bridalwear, couture garments, blouses and shirts. We'd also recommend this for sleepwear, lingerie and bedding due to its strong weave, exceptional drape and warmth against the skin.
There is an approximate 2% weft shrinkage and 3% warp shrinkage. It will take natural dyes well, and due to its smooth tight finish is also suitable for printing. Please test the swatch or a sample length before batch production.
Produced on small family farms, the silk is cultivated using techniques consistent with Organic Cultivation Standards. 100% natural, it means that no additives, bleaches or finishes have been used - better for people and planet. For the silkworms, organic standards mean that the worms have been allowed to graze on organically cultivated land. When it comes to peace silk, the moth has been allowed to complete its full transformation, emerging from the cocoon alive and able to continue with mating. Additionally, the eggs are raised every year from one strain, assisting in the conservation of the species. This means that the fibre tends to be of a shorter length, usually meaning that the fabric can be irregular in weave, however, this fabric, in particular, has an even and smooth weave partly due to being woven on machine machines rather than handlooms.
This Eri silk fabric is part of a local government-sponsored project, benefiting the impoverished hill tribe people of the highlands in Southern India. The Eri silk fabric is produced on a non-chemical farm, with the silk worms' castor bean nourishment planted around the perimeter of the micro family farm cotton fields, which also acts as a natural insect repellent for the cotton too.
Silk is biodegradable (in the right anaerobic conditions) so at the end of its life can be composted. Silk is also an incredibly strong fibre that will last for a very long time anyway, so along with non-certified organic cultivation and processing, this fabric is beneficial to the land before and after its production. This particular textile is natural in colour, being undyed and unbleached.
To care for your product
We recommend that you eco dry clean or hand wash this fabric. Use a mild detergent, or even none at all to keep it fresh and light throughout its life. Machine wash on a gentle cycle, with mild soap and warm water. If you're making lingerie, it is often beneficial to wash these items within a drawstring bag to prevent too much agitation and wear on the fabric.
Tumble dry on low heat, though we recommend air drying to ensure longer-lasting items. You can also iron dry from a barely damp state on the "wrong" side, which can also help with creasing. Never use bleach. Always test a small swatch or section of the garment before sewing if in doubt or creating for a brand.
