A chunky, basket weave cotton canvas in its undyed, natural, beige colour. Its strong basket weave structure, characterised by multiple yarns being used for the warp and weft, means that the fabric is particularly durable with a great structure and hold. This and the 10.3oz weight makes it particularly suitable for heavier clothing such as jackets, easy trousers, shirts and skirts, along with accessories and soft furnishings.
The colour of the fabric is slightly speckled - a common trait in undyed, cotton textiles - with an irregular almost darker-hue stripe across the weft. It is also ideal for natural dyeing if you'd like to retain the charm of the weave but with another shade. You could also use it as a base for embroidery.
The spinning of the organic cotton into yarn and the weaving of the fabric on power looms is all done in a female-led co-operative in rural India, certified Fair Trade by the WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation). Organic cotton itself is cotton grown without pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers, and is picked by hand to retain the integrity of the cellulosic fibre. Non-GMO seeds are used in organic cotton cultivation, ensuring that the farmers are not caught in a web of debt with large companies. This organic cotton is non-certified, being more of a transitional crop to help support farmers and small communities who cannot afford the certification.
All cotton production uses a lot of water and chemicals in its production, however, this fabric is created using rain-fed organically-cultivated cotton, spun and woven with little electricity, and without dyeing. The fabric itself is biodegradable under the right conditions.
Please note, as this is a handwoven and hand-dyed fabric, woven using organic cotton fibre that is hand-picked and processed, there is likely to be small irregularities in the weave, primarily as a slight slub or dark thread that has been pulled through the weft. As it is already a speckled fabric, it is unlikely to be visible, and we hope that you can take this as part of the charm anyway.
To care for your product:
Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer. Iron med-hot temperature, though likely won't need much.
Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year.
We also recommend line drying as this reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer, and if you dry flat it will help prevent stretching in the weave. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher or even just steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.
Note, it will also shrink around 3-5% due to its unwashed and handwoven state.
