This is a beautiful turquoise-blue print on a cloudy white base. The design is printed by hand using the screenprinting method (rather than a block as was the original technique when we first started stocking this fabric). The dyes are totally ironable and colourfast (although we always recommend washing your fabrics before you make) and the fabric can be washed in washing machines
The Tree of Life commonly represents the interconnectedness of everything in the universe. It symbolises togetherness and serves as a reminder that you are never alone or isolated, but rather that you are connected to the world. It also looks to rebirth, growth and strength.
It is a fabric that will transcend seasons and works in both fashion and interiors. A completely opaque, lightweight fabric with a crisp texture, good drape and a full body. Cambric is a smooth and fine plain weave, very similar to batiste. It is warm and soft to the touch, with a light summery drape perfect for clothing, childrenswear, blinds and pillowcases. It is a little see-through though due to the white base.
This print is also available as a lighter more open weave muslin fabric.
The fabric is hand woven using organic cotton so the farmers and cotton processors do not come into contact with pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers. The fabric itself is woven within a community that is certified fair trade by the WFTO. Although it does not have organic certification, due to the additional expense this incurs, which the weavers can not currently afford, this is far better for people and planet than conventional cotton.
Organic cotton is better for our soil, because no pesticides, chemical fertilisers or herbicides have been used. It means that there are no toxic substances passed on in the processing and then through to the finished fabric. Eco bleaching is used for the white base, and dyes used for hand block print are azo-free and totally ironable and colourfast (although we always recommend washing your fabrics before you make). As it is handwoven, the process from raw material production to weaving and printing uses little energy and water.
Please note: due to the nature of handwoven and hand block fabrics, there can be irregularities in the weave and print, along with variations in batch dye colour. If you are looking for a particular shade, please get in touch so that we can check if a colour is available. The photos shown here contain two different batches, one with a more saturated blue tone (last 4 images). Before we receive any new bulk delivery, we'll check the batch to update photos.
To care for your product:
Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer, though to protect the hand-blocked natural dye print for longer, we recommend hand washing any item you make with this textile. Iron med-hot temperature on the reverse to protect the print.
Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year.
We also recommend line drying as this reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher or even just steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.
Please note: this is now only available as 100 metre minimum until pandemic restrictions have allowed co-operative workers to return to their weaving communities safely. If you think you can raise some of that, let us know and we can open a pre-order to potentially make a collective order. See our full guidelines here. Please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with your desired amount and time frame, and we'll give you more details.
