Vasanta means "brilliant" or "spring" in Sanskrit. This is the name of a Hindu personification of the spring. This is a beautiful light blue print on a clean white base. The design is printed by hand using wooden "hand-blocks". The dyes are totally ironable and colourfast (although we always recommend washing your fabrics before you make) and the fabric can be washed in washing machines.
It is a fabric that will transend seasons and works in both fashion and interiors. A slightly see-through, lightweight fabric with a warm hand feel and soft drape, it benefits from a lining or doubling up for clothing, but is also perfect for blinds and curtains due to the sheer quality. Muslin is a more open plain weave (than cambric or batiste) and so is also airy in feeling.
This print is also available as a denser cambric fabric.
The fabric is hand woven using organic cotton so the farmers and cotton processors do not come into contact with pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers. The fabric itself is woven within a community that is certified fair trade by the WFTO. Although it does not have organic certification, due to the additional expense this incurs, which the weavers can not currently afford, this is far better for people and planet than conventional cotton.
Organic cotton is better for our soil, because no pesticides, chemical fertilisers or herbicides have been used. It means that there are no toxic substances passed on in the processing and then through to the finished fabric. Eco bleaching is used for the white base, and dyes used for hand block print are azo-free and totally ironable and colourfast (although we always recommend washing your fabrics before you make). As it is hand woven, the process from raw material production to weaving and printing uses little energy and water.
Please note: due to the nature of hand woven and hand block fabrics, there can be irregularities in the weave and print, along with variations in batch dye colour. If you are looking for a particular shade, please get in touch so that we can check if a colour is available. The images show two different batches.
To care for your product:
Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer, though to protect the hand blocked natural dye print for longer, we recommend hand washing any item you make with this textile. Iron med-hot temperature on the reverse to protect the print.
Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year.
We also recommend line drying as this reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher or even just steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.
Please note: this is now only available as 50 metre minimum. If you think you can raise some of that, let us know and we can open a pre-order to potentially make a collective order. See our full guidelines here. Please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with your desired amount and time frame, and we'll give you more details.
