Beautiful, lightweight cotton, handwoven in a fair trade accredited female-led co-operative.
SALE: 30% OFF.
£19.70 per metre. Price per metre. Multiple quantities will be cut as a continuous length.
This lightweight white organic cotton fabric has a matte-textured surface. Basket weaves tend to have more texture than plain weaves due to the doubling of yarns woven in the weft. However, this fabric is still smooth-feeling on the skin. This fabric has a bit of structure, so it is less fluid than a sateen while also being more substantial in hand-feel than a poplin.
This is a versatile fabric. Not only can you use it as it is, but it's also fantastic for natural dyeing, printing, embroidery and painting. In terms of clothing, it has a slight sheerness, so it is best for summer tops, lined dresses, easy trousers and skirts, lined jackets or as a lining itself. It is also lovely for interiors, homewares, cushions, blinds and curtains, pillowcases and quilting.
The spinning of the organic cotton into yarn, weaving the fabric on power looms, and bleaching of the finished material is all done in a female-led co-operative in rural India, certified Fair Trade by the WFTO (World Fair Trade Organisation). Organic cotton is cotton grown without pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers and is picked by hand to retain the integrity of the cellulosic fibre. Non-GMO seeds are used in organic cotton cultivation, ensuring that the farmers are not caught in a web of debt with large companies. This organic cotton is non-certified, being more of a transitional crop to help support farmers and small communities who cannot afford the certification.
All cotton production uses a lot of water and chemicals in its production. However, this fabric is created using rain-fed organically-cultivated cotton, spun and woven with little electricity, and without dyeing (just eco bleaching). The material is biodegradable under the right conditions.
Please note, as this is a handwoven and hand-dyed fabric with organic cotton fibre that is hand-picked and processed, you may find minor irregularities. These usually consist of slight slub or dark threads pulled through the weft. This is part of the beauty of handwoven fabrics and does not distract from its charm. Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer. Iron med-hot temperature.
Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year.
We also recommend line drying, reducing energy usage and looking after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher or even steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.
Note that fabrics can shrink around 3-5%, so please prewash all fabrics before sewing.
