A red and blue check handwoven cotton. Dyed with natural madder dye and handspun and handwoven by a small cooperative in India.
Price is per metre. Multiple quantities will be cut as a continuous length.
An organic cotton fabric featuring a red and blue check. The fabric has a slight texture and a soft, dry handle reminiscent of linen. The fibres are handspun using an "amber charkha" (a modernised version of a spinning wheel) and handwoven into material using paddle looms. The material is printed and dyed by hand, giving it a vibrant and authentic feel. When you purchase this fabric, you're directly supporting the weaver who created it and can be reassured that they are guaranteed a fair price for their beautiful handcraft, as the producers are certified by Fair Trade Forum India (a member of The World Fair Trade Organization, WFTO). The fabric is 45"/114cm wide and approximately 125gsm, so it is lightweight and suitable for projects, particularly for summer garments, including blouses, shirts, easy loungewear, summer trousers and dresses, light blankets and quilts, sheer blinds and accessories. It's wonderfully easy to sew.

The fibres are handspun using an "amber charkha" (a modernised version of a spinning wheel), and handwoven into the material using paddle looms by artisanal weaving clusters from Saurashtra Gujarat, West India. As it is handwoven, the production from raw material to weaving and printing uses little energy and water. The weavers set their prices for their work and are paid a fair, living wage.
The cotton is grown, spun and processed without any chemicals. Although it does not have organic certification, due to the additional expense this incurs, which the weavers can not currently afford, this is far better for people and the planet than conventional cotton. Organic cotton is better for our soil because no pesticides, chemical fertilisers or herbicides have been used. It means that there are no toxic substances passed on in the processing and then through to the finished fabric.
The yarns that create the red checks are dyed with natural madder without hazardous chemicals.

Suitable for washing machines and tumble dryers. Wash with similar colours. To protect fabrics for longer, hand wash in cool water. Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year. Suitable for irons med-hot temperature. We recommend line drying as this reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer (as they don't get bashed around in your tumble dryer). Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher or even steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.
Natural handwoven fabrics have a natural tendency to shrink 3-5%, so please wash this textile before you create any products that will require washing at a later date.
Stepped pricing is available on 25 metres and over, so please inquire if you are looking for large amounts. We love working with smaller brands: purchase one metre and upwards directly from the website and email us for wholesale quantities for bulk production when you're ready. We welcome large and small orders from brands of all sizes.
Please note that refunds are not possible once fabrics have been cut, unless in the unfortunate event that your material arrives damaged. Please order a swatch before purchasing your metre lengths. Please see our Refunds and Cancellation Policy page for full details.
Due to the nature of handwoven and hand-printed fabrics, there can be irregularities in the weave and print, along with variations in batch dye colour. We have quality controlled this fabric. However, there could be minor irregularities that we love and see as normal and charming. If you are unhappy with the material you purchase, please let us know, and we'll do our best to rectify it immediately: email@example.com.
