Handprinted hand tied shibori-effect handspun cotton fabric, woven by a small co-operative cluster in India.
45"/110cm wide, and approximately 65-75g/sqm means that it is suitable for lightweight projects including blouses, linings, curtains, dresses and accessories.
It has a soft floaty drape that will be taken by the air, but the hand feel has texture to it ensuring you'll notice it on your skin. There are pin pricks in the warp and weft that give charm and additional breathability, caused by the bunching of the fabric for shibori dyeing.
The pattern is created using the "nui" shibori technique - a design is traced on the fabric before a running stitch is manually made (using nylon thread) along the design, with the threads pulled from either side to essentially pleat the fabric close together in folds. As the fabric will get coloured during dyeing where there is no nylon thread, knots and binding are created to compress the fabric. The fabric is soaked in a bath of azo-free dyes, removed and washed then left to dry.
The fabric has a large plain selvedge as this is where the fabric is left without any "stitch resist" binding. As the whole piece is hand tied and fully immersed in dye, both sides of the fabric are patterned.
Please note: this is a limited edition fabric and cannot be produced again. This is why swatches of it are not available.
The fabric is hand woven on small power looms using sustainable cotton in Southern India. Unfortunately as there is little traceability in the bulk fibre purchasing, we cannot know if the fibre is truly organically cultivated. The fibre itself is spun within small artisan clusters, and the fabric itself is woven within a very small community known as a "shibori cluster" in West Bengal.
Fabric that is produced within the same country prevents unnecessary shipping during production. The dyes used for the fabric are azo-free, and totally ironable and colourfast (although we always recommend washing your fabrics before you make). The nylon threads used in the tying process unfortunately cannot be re-used as they are too short. As the fabric is hand woven on small power looms, the process from raw material production to weaving and printing uses little energy and water. This textile also sustains the skilled artisans who produce it.
Please note: due to the nature of hand woven and hand printed fabrics, there can be irregularities in the weave and print, along with variations in batch dye colour. We have quality controlled this fabric, however there could be minor flaws that we see as normal and charming.
Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer, though to protect the hand print for longer, we recommend hand washing any item you make with this textile in cool water. Iron med-hot temperature, but it is suggested to do so when damp, or spray a little water on it first.
Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year.
We also recommend line drying as this reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher or even just steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.
Natural handwoven fabrics have a natural tendency to shrink 3-5%, so do wash this textile first before you create any products that will require washing at a later date.
