A soft and sweet blush pink ikat that has been spun, dyed and woven by hand. It is full of character with yarns in various shades of pink and white being used in the weave. It features patterned stripes that run vertically down the length of the cloth, with a distinctive hardy-feeling raised texture. It is smooth despite the weave, and so we love it for upholstery and interiors, though because it is soft with a light drape, it's also delicious as clothing - skirts, drawstring trousers, jackets. It's mediumweight but has an opacity so doesn't necessarily need to be lined, and it even has some give in the bias due to the weave structure meaning it's also comfortable.
The production of the fabric from the cotton yarn requires absolutely no electricity. We have sourced this fabric directly from a small weaving village in Thailand and all sales directly support this community, ensuring that the weavers are paid fair wages for their artisanal work.
Each metre of fabric takes approximately four hours to weave, and an entire bolt takes over a month. Despite the traditional, handwork methods used to create the textile, the design is timeless and fits seamlessly with today's contemporary style. The change of pattern design allows for free-flowing creativity that is synonymous with ikat weaving. The fabric has been yarn-dyed (the yarn is dyed before it is woven) with natural plant and vegetable dyes, with no use of chemical mordants. The use of yarn-dyeing techniques means that there is additional character in the cloth where each weft is different.
As the fabric is 100% cotton and uses only natural dyeing methods, it is totally biodegradable in the optimum settings. The fabric is colourfast and pre-shrunk, but we always recommend that fabrics are washed before use just in case.
The image selection shows ikats being woven in Thailand, the yarn winding process and Charlie selecting naturally-dyed yarn colours. There's also a close-up of some ikats so that you can better see the texture, but unfortunately these colourways and patterns are not available.
To care for your product
Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer.
Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year. We also recommend line drying as this reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher or even just steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.
Stepped pricing is available on quantities of 25 metres and over. Email us at email@example.com to enquire.
Notes on handwoven textiles:
While we want our fabrics to exceed your expectations and strive to manufacture all of our textiles to a consistent specification, the nature of handwoven fabrics means that it can be difficult to exactly replicate the colour and handling qualities of a fabric from batch to batch and that every part of the process will be variable to a degree. This is the beauty of handmade, artisanal textiles. If you are in any doubt, please check with us before placing any order. Once orders are placed they are unfortunately non-refundable unless there is clearly a fault that we've missed.
