Handwoven cotton khadi fabric, woven by a small co-operative cluster in India with a classic candy stripe in cute pink shades. "Khadi" refers to a traditional handwoven cloth.

45"/110cm wide, and approximately 77-82gsm means that it is suitable for lightweight projects including blouses, shirts, easy loungewear and underwear, light blankets and quilts, linings and blinds, dresses and accessories. It is in between poplin and voile in weight, as it still has translucency in the light but is very smooth in hand feel.

It is very smooth to the touch, with a soft feeling. The warp yarns are the same thickness, so you get a consistency with handle and texture. The fabric is made of four pink shades, with one stripe containing two of those, which gives a chambray effect. "Yarn dyed" refers to the fact that the fabric is woven with coloured yarns, rather than being dyed afterwards.

The stripes are vertical, and measure approximately 5.5mm, 4.5mm and 5mm (brighter pink).

The fabric has a smooth finished selvedge due to the nature of being woven on hand looms, so you may not even need to seam some garments if the pattern lay is used wisely.

Please note: this is a limited edition fabric and is unlikely to be produced again. This is why swatches of it are not available.

Ethical production:

The fabric is hand woven on small power looms using sustainable cotton in Southern India. Unfortunately as there is little traceability in the bulk fibre purchasing, we cannot know if the fibre is truly organically cultivated. The fibre itself is spun within small artisan clusters, and the fabric itself is woven within a community known as a "khadi cluster" in Bengal.

Sustainability:

Fabric that is produced within the same country prevents unnecessary shipping during production. The dyes used for the fabric are azo-free, and totally ironable and colourfast (although we always recommend washing your fabrics before you make). The wax used for the batik process is recovered and reused. As it is hand woven on small power looms, the process from raw material production to weaving and printing uses little energy and water. This textile also sustains the skilled artisans who produce it.

Please note: due to the nature of hand woven and hand printed fabrics, there can be irregularities in the weave and print, along with variations in batch dye colour. We have quality controlled this fabric, however there could be minor flaws that we see as normal and charming.

To care for your product:

Suitable for the washing machine and tumble dryer, though to protect the hand print for longer, we recommend hand washing any item you make with this textile in cool water. Iron med-hot temperature, but it is suggested to do so when damp, or spray a little water on it first.

Turn the machine down to 30 degrees for a more environmentally friendly wash. In Europe alone, if every household turned its washing temperature down to 30°C, we could save 12 million tons of CO2 a year.

We also recommend line drying as this reduces energy usage and looks after your textiles for longer. Use a mild detergent, light botanical refresher or even just steam the item you've made in your bathroom after a shower.

Natural handwoven fabrics have a natural tendency to shrink 3-5%, so do wash this textile first before you create any products that will require washing at a later date.
